Study of the structural state of K-feldspars of igneous rocks from Northern Greece with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) techniques

K-feldspars are members of a greater mineral group, feldspars. Their structure consists of a three dimensional array of Si and Al tetrahedra. Three of the four tetrahedral sites of their formula unit are occupied by Si and the fourth by Al. High temperature form of KAlSi3O8, sanidine (Sa), crystallizes in monoclinic (C2/m), the low temperature microcline (Mi) in triclinic (C ) and there is an intermediate form, orthoclase (Or). The studied areas were chosen in order to be studied the entire range of their structural state and are localized in the igneous rocks of N. Greece. The K-feldspar extraction of the rest minerals of the various rock types where made in such a way to be as pure K-feldspar phase as possible. From XRPD data the 95 studied samples are divided in 29 Sa, 24 Or and 42 Mi. The degree of triclinicity (Δ) was calculated from data of their XRPD patterns, as well as their cell parameters and the possibility of Al to occupy the T sites. The use of different number or initial cell parameters of reflections affects the values of the calculated cell parameters. The study of the FTIR spectra revealed common features in all samples. It is observed sharpening and increase of the number of bands as the ordering of their structural state is increasing. Each of the 3 different species present common features, but amongst them differentiations are observed. In the spectra of Sa 8 broad bands, of Or 9 bands and 2 shoulders and of Mi 12 sharp bands are observed. Two bands at 548 and 638cm-1 are shifted to 536 and 647cm-1 as the ordering of their structural state is increasing. The frequency each of the two bands and their ratio are correlated with the ordering of K-feldspars’ structural state with linear equations and very good correlation coefficients. With analogous linear equations are associated the ratio of the cell parameters b/c and the reflections of the 2θ 060/ 04, while the t10 with exponential equations. The parameters t1m, a and the reflection of the 2θ 01 could not associated with the above mentioned parameters. The temperature corresponding to their structural state was estimated graphically and correlated with the frequencies of the two above mentioned bands and their ratio, with a linear equation with a very good correlation coefficient. Summarizing the above studies, the FTIR spectral features can provide information about the species of the K-feldspar, their structural state and the temperature corresponding to their structural state.Οι K-ούχοι άστριοι είναι μέλη της ομάδας των αστρίων. Η δομή τους αποτελείται από ένα τρισδιάστατο ικρίωμα τετραέδρων Si και Al. Οι 3 από τις 4 τετραεδρικές θέσεις της μοναδιαίας κυψελίδας τους καταλαμβάνονται από Si, ενώ η τέταρτη από Al. Η υψηλής θερμοκρασίας μορφή KAlSi3O8, το σανίδινο (Sa), κρυσταλλώνεται στο μονοκλινές σύστημα (C2/m), ο χαμηλής θερμοκρασίας μικροκλινής (Mi) στο τρικλινές (C ), με ενδιάμεσο μέλος, το ορθόκλαστο (Or). Οι περιοχές δειγματοληψίας καλύπτουν όλο το φάσμα της δομικής τους κατάστασης κι εντοπίζονται στις εμφανίσεις πυριγενών πετρωμάτων της Β. Ελλάδας. Ο διαχωρισμός των Κ-ούχων αστρίων έγινε με τέτοιο τρόπο, ώστε να είναι όσο το δυνατόν αμιγείς Κ-ούχες φάσεις. Η μελέτη τους με XRPD έδειξε ότι τα 95 εξεταζόμενα δείγματα διακρίνονται σε 29 Sa, 24 Or και 42 Mi. Επίσης, υπολογίστηκε ο βαθμός τρικλινικότητάς τους (Δ), οι κυψελιδικές τους παράμετροι κι η πιθανότητα κατάληψης των Τ θέσεων από το κατιόν του Al. Διαφορετικές τιμές κυψελιδικών παραμέτρων προέκυψαν με τη χρήση διαφορετικών αρχικών κυψελιδικών παραμέτρων ή διαφορετικού αριθμού ανακλάσεων. Από τη μελέτη των φασμάτων FTIR προέκυψε ότι όλα τα δείγματα εμφανίζουν κοινά χαρακτηριστικά σε συγκεκριμένες περιοχές. Παρατηρήθηκε αύξηση της οξύτητας και του αριθμού των κορυφών με αύξηση του βαθμού της ταξινομημένης διάταξής τους. Αν και κάθε είδος Κ-ούχου αστρίου παρουσιάζει όμοια κοινά χαρακτηριστικά, μεταξύ των τριών ειδών παρατηρούνται διαφοροποιήσεις. Τα Sa παρουσιάζουν 8 διευρυμένες κορυφές, τα Or 9 κορυφές και 2 shoulder, ενώ οι Mi 12 οξείες κορυφές. Παρατηρείται ότι 2 κορυφές, στα 548 και 638cm-1, μετατοπίζονται με την αύξηση του βαθμού ταξινομημένης διάταξης στα 536 και 647cm-1. Βρέθηκε ότι η θέση των δύο κορυφών κι ο λόγος τους σχετίζονται με το βαθμό ταξινομημένης διάταξης των Κ-ούχων αστρίων με γραμμικές εξισώσεις και πολύ καλούς συντελεστές συσχέτισης, όπως επίσης και με το λόγο των κυψελιδικών παραμέτρων b/c και των ανακλάσεων των επιπέδων 2θ 060/ 04, ενώ η παράμετρος t10 με εκθετικές. Δε βρέθηκε αντιστοιχία στη θέση των κορυφών με τις παραμέτρους t1m, a και τη γωνία 2θ 01. Εκτιμήθηκε γραφικά η θερμοκρασία που αντιστοιχεί στη δομική κατάσταση των Κ-ούχων αστρίων και συσχετίσθηκε με τις θέσεις και το λόγο των δύο κορυφών με γραμμικές εξισώσεις και πολύ καλό συντελεστή συσχέτισης. Συνεπώς, τα χαρακτηριστικά των φασμάτων FTIR μπορούν να παρέχουν πληροφορίες για το είδος του Κ-ούχου αστρίου, τη δομική κατάστασή του, αλλά και τη θερμοκρασία της δομικής του κατάστασης
