In the present study we examined the association between the ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) and severity of peripheral neuropathy in 275 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Based on the Neuropathy Disability Score (NDS), patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of peripheral neuropathy or its severity. After patients’ genotyping, each group was further divided into genotype/allele carrier subgroups. In multivariate analysis, no correlation was founded between APOE gene polymorphisms and the occurrence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. However, a more than 3-fold increased risk of severe neuropathy was associated with ε4 carrier status (adjusted OR: 3.51, 95% CI: 1.34-9.19, p=0.011) among patients p...
