The primary object of this dissertation was the development of a simple methodology that could be used for predicting crack initiation at welded beam-to-column connections in moment resisting frames under seismic loading. In order to simulate crack initiation within the used steel, an approach based on damage mechanics concepts was used. Progressive failure of the material is computed through local variables such as plastic strains and stress triaxiality values. The critical combination of these variables as computed through extensive experimental and analytical studies serves as the criterion for crack initiation.
