The overarching goal of the work presented in this dissertation is the development of drug delivery systems (DDS) using minerals as carriers of anticancer chemotherapeutic drugs. The work followed a mainly in vitro approach. The investigation was oriented towards two major directions. First, the behavior of the minerals hydroxyapatite (ΗΑΡ), faujasite (FAU) and montmorillonite (MMT) as carriers of the anticancer drugs gemcitabine hydrochloride (dFdU.HCl) and oxaliplatin (DACH-Pt) for the development of a DDS was investigated. The adsorption capacity and kinetics of each drug in their aqueous solutions by the minerals, as well as their release profiles in simulated body fluids (SBF) were studied.
