George Geralis: a late post-symbolist voice in the first postwar poetic generation

This thesis examines the poetic work of George Geralis, a minor poet of the first postwar poetic generation. In this, literary integration issues are examined, also with poetics and critical reception of his work. In particular, Geralis’ relationship with symbolism and postsymbolism that survived in the work of some poets of the first postwar generation is discussed. Then, issues of format, language and versification are discussed, from the traditional poetry of his first to the modernist poetry of his later poetic collections. Furthermore, the thesis presents the key issues of Geralis’ poetic work, focusing on the theme of love and death, without detracting minor issues (e.g. political poetry, poetry itself or the alienation of modern man etc.). Also, the study deals with the critical reception of Geralis’ official work, where general issues of concern to modern Greek literature are also being discussed. Finally, the thesis includes a timeline with information about the life and work of the poet.Η διατριβή εξετάζει το ποιητικό έργο του Γιώργου Γεραλή, ενός ελάσσονος ποιητή της πρώτης μεταπολεμικής γενιάς. Εξετάζονται ζητήματα γραμματολογικής ένταξης, ποιητικής και πρόσληψης. Ειδικότερα, συζητείται η σχέση του Γεραλή με τον συμβολισμό και τον μετασυμβολισμό που επιβίωσε στο έργο κάποιων ποιητών της γενιάς του. Έπειτα, μελετώνται ζητήματα μορφής, γλώσσας και στιχουργίας, από την παραδοσιακή ποίηση των πρώτων του συλλογών, έως τις τελευταίες συλλογές, όπου υιοθετούνται νεωτερικά στοιχεία. Ακόμη, παρουσιάζονται τα βασικά θέματα που εμφανίζονται στο ποιητικό έργο του Γεραλή, με έμφαση στο θέμα του θανάτου και του έρωτα, χωρίς να παραγνωρίζονται θέματα μικρότερης εμβέλειας (πολιτική ποίηση, η ίδια η ποίηση ή η αλλοτρίωση του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου κ.ά.). Επίσης, η μελέτη ασχολείται με την κριτική υποδοχή του επίσημου έργου του, όπου συζητούνται και γενικότερα ζητήματα που απασχολούν την νεοελληνική λογοτεχνία.
