Hip fractures contribute to worldwide burden of disability and reduced quality of life in elderly. Less than 50% of patients with hip fracture recover the pre-fractured functional status. 6-33% of those who lived independent in their own houses are forced to move in hospices for the aged, after the hip fracture. One year after hip fracture and despite rehabilitation, patients continue to suffer by a decreased functional status and low quality of life. Multidisciplinary programs that assist patients with hip fracture to regain function, quality of life and return home as soon as feasible, are likely to be effective as they appear to increase the percentage of patients who return home and remain there after hip fracture.
