Malignant growth is essentially characterized by an uncontrolled tissue remodeling process in which normal tissue is substituted by cancer tissue. Interaction between tumor and stromal cells plays a major role in cancer progression. Tumor cells can reside in the stroma and modify it, they can alter the connective tissue, modulate the metabolism of stroma cells thus creating a convenient environment. In addition the tumor stroma contains a rich cellular population, which includes fibroblasts, endothelail cells, macrophages and other inflammatory cells.
