Digital processing, modeling and virtual representation of important archaeological finds

The present thesis refers to three main directions: a/. An original method for segmenting grayscale images. More specifically, the develop image segmentation method determines to distinguish thematic region in a grayscale image. b/. The second direction concerns a study of the method of constructions of vessels of the Prehistoric Town of Akrotiri Thera Greece circa 1620 BC. c/. In the third part of the thesis, a new approach is presented for the virtual representation of important Prehistoric buildings. This method has been applied to virtual representation of the building ‘Tomeas A’, excavated by S. Marinatos, a building of particular archaeological and Historical importance. The first subject of the thesis includes the following parts: • Application of morphological filters for noise reduction in the image. • Evaluation of the gray scale histogram of the image in hand. • Optimal approximation of each histogram by two normal distributions. • Initial estimation of the pixels of the two regions, by exploitation of the turning points of the aforementioned normal distributions. • Homogenization of each region separately. • Final determination of the letter or the vessel body in one hand and of the background of the other. The second direction of the thesis includes the following actions: • Extraction of the vessel contour in a proper form, suitable for the subsequent processing. • Automatic optimal fitting of the vessels contours. • An initial estimation of the ideal representative of the potential guide probably employed for the construction of the vessel. • Optimal matching of the ideal representative of the vessels guides, in a pair- wise manner. • Testing if the ideal representative of each vessel corresponds to a geometric prototype and in particular to a conic or a spiral. In the third part of the thesis, a new approach is presented for the virtual representation of important Prehistoric buildings. This virtual representation is based on a scenario, for which a particular effort has been undertaken in order that it is consistent from an architectural, archaeological and historical point of view. In particular the subsequent steps have been followed in the thesis: • Insertion of the architectural drawing in a computer. • Obtaining numerous photos of the building from different points of view. • A first representation of the ruins of ‘Tomeas A’ in the computer. • Choice of the more consist an scenario from archaeological historical and architectural point of view. A first digital representation of the scenario by means of static images. • Proper choice of important factors of the digital representation such as lighting textures and landscape. • Realization of the scenario by means of a video. Mikonanou, M. Oikononou. Athens 2008 664-671.Η παρούσα διατριβή αφορά σε τρία θέματα: Το πρώτο περιλαμβάνει μια πρωτότυπη μέθοδο κατάτμησης εικόνων αποχρώσεων του γκρι. Συγκεκριμένα παρουσιάζεται κατ’ αρχήν μια μέθοδος αυτόματης κατάτμησης εικόνων αποχρώσεων του γκρι σε δυο θεματικές περιοχές. Στο δεύτερο μελετάται ο τρόπος κατασκευής αγγείων στην Ύστερη Εποχή του Χαλκού, με χρήση πρωτότυπων μεθόδων αναγνώρισης προτύπων και επεξεργασίας εικόνας. Στο τρίτο παρουσιάζεται μια νέα προσέγγιση στην εικονική αναπαράσταση χώρων αρχαίων οικισμών. Το πρώτο θέμα περιλαμβάνει τα εξής επιμέρους στάδια: εφαρμογή μορφολογικών φίλτρων για εξάλειψη θορύβου. δημιουργία ιστογράμματος διαβάθμισης του γκρι. βέλτιστη προσέγγιση του χρωματικού ιστογράμματος κάθε πλαισίου με δυο ανεξάρτητες κανονικές κατανομές. αρχική εκτίμηση των θεματικών περιοχών και των σημείων ακμής. εξάλειψη του θορύβου και ομογενοποίηση των θεματικών περιοχών. τελικό καθορισμό των δύο θεματικών περιοχών του σώματος του αγγείου ή του γράμματος και του υποβάθρου.. Το δεύτερο θέμα περιλαμβάνει: την εξαγωγή περιγράμματος των αγγείων σε κατάλληλη μορφή βέλτιστη αυτόματη προσαρμογή των περιγραμμάτων των αγγείων μια πρώτη εκτίμηση του ιδεατού προτύπου του οδηγού ενός αγγείου βέλτιστη προσαρμογή των ιδεατών αντιπροσώπων ανά ζεύγη βέλτιστη προσαρμογή ιδεατού αντιπροσώπου οικογένειας αγγείων σε κάποιο από αυτά τα γεωμετρικά πρότυπα. Στο τρίτο θέμα αναπτύσσεται και εφαρμόζεται μέθοδος εικονικής αναπαράστασης του κτιρίου «Τομέας Α» για πρώτη φορά, που ήταν τμήμα του Προϊστορικού Οικισμού του Ακρωτηρίου Θήρας γύρω στα 1620 π.Χ. Η ψηφιακή αυτή απεικόνιση γίνεται σε μορφή video και κατά τέτοιο τρόπο, ώστε να υλοποιεί ένα σενάριο για το πώς ήταν πραγματικά ο Τομέας Α, το οποίο είναι όσο το δυνατόν ακριβέστερο και συνεπέστερο από αρχιτεκτονικής, στατικής, αρχαιολογικής και ιστορικής σκοπιάς. Ειδικότερα τα βήματα τα οποία ακολουθήθηκαν είναι τα εξής: Εισαγωγή του αρχιτεκτονικού σχεδίου του Τομέα Α στον υπολογιστή. Λήψη πολλών φωτογραφιών από ικανό αριθμό διαφορετικών θέσεων της μηχανής. Πρώτη απεικόνιση στον υπολογιστή των σωζομένων ερειπίων του Τομέα Α. Επιλογή του συνεπέστερου από αρχαιολογικής, αρχιτεκτονικής, στατικής και ιστορικής σκοπιάς σεναρίου και πρώτη απεικόνιση αυτού μέσω στατικών εικόνων. Κατάλληλη επιλογή ειδικών παραμέτρων της ψηφιακής αναπαράστασης όπως φωτισμός, υφή υλικών, περιβάλλων χώρος. Υλοποίηση του σεναρίου σε video.
