This thesis is mainly an investigation into the frescoes painted by Spyridon Papaloukas for the Cathedral of Amfissa with special reference to his concept of ‘colour’ and the possible iconological implications that a precise consideration of colour could have on the functionality of his work. Further to the presentation of the work in Amfissa as a focal point, this research is also expanded to other iconological works of his such as the Church of Saint Dimitrios in Desfina, the Nomikos School Chapel and his portable icons. The study of the use of colours in his iconography is related to the question as to what the frescoes in Amfissa actually express.
