The relation of surface and depth and the way of the mask in 20th century architecture: The Marcel Breuer case

Within the logic of Postmodernism, it is observed that depth is replaced by surface, or by multiple surfaces, independent, fragmented, or even ephemeral, that no longer carry the obligation of expressing some deeper meaning. This observation gave rise to a set of questions that form the axis of the current thesis. Is it possible to think that depth’s lost is not irrevocable? And since we live at the era of the surface, should we eventually look for depth into the surface? And what characteristics this surface should have? Through the architectural work of Marcel Breuer and his theoretical views on architecture we managed to transfer these questions into the architectural field. We used the method of dual analysis focusing on the antithetical pair of surface and depth, we made an endeavour to categorize the main ways of depth's expression in architectural practice, creating a scheme of four depth models, which according to our argument, incorporate the most important criteria of architectural design. However, we do not intend to restore the former hierarchical order within this antithetical pair in today’s architectural thought, but rather to elevate the complex nature of architecture, which we should not deny insisting on an artificial categorization. Therefore, concluding our conceptual analysis based on the four depth models, we return to a more holistic perspective towards architecture, since, in reality, the object is unified and all these models are entangled to one another. At the same time we return to a logic that doesn't subsidize, change, or decline any of the two antithetical terms, but sustains their coexistence in all its strength, within a new situation that we call mask.Στα πλαίσια της μεταμοντέρνας λογικής παρατηρείται η μετάπτωση της σημασίας του βάθους και η αντικατάστασή του από την επιφάνεια, ή από πολλαπλές επιφάνειες, αυτόνομες, αποσπασματικές, ή και εφήμερες, απαλλαγμένες από το χρέος της έκφρασης κάποιου βαθύτερου νοήματος. Η παρατήρηση αυτή γέννησε τον προβληματισμό γύρω από τον οποίο στρέφεται η παρούσα μελέτη. Μήπως το βάθος δε χάθηκε ανεπιστρεπτί; Μήπως τελικά στην εποχή της κυριαρχίας της επιφάνειας θα πρέπει να το αναζητήσουμε μέσα στην ίδια την επιφάνεια; Και τι χαρακτηριστικά θα έχει η επιφάνεια αυτή; Μέσα από το αρχιτεκτονικό έργο του Marcel Breuer, αλλά και τις θεωρητικές του απόψεις για την αρχιτεκτονική, καταφέραμε να μεταφέρουμε τα ερωτήματα αυτά στο πεδίο της αρχιτεκτονικής. Η μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιήσαμε ήταν αυτή της δυαδικής ανάλυσης εστιάζοντας στη διαζευκτική σχέση μεταξύ της επιφάνειας και του βάθους, προχωρήσαμε σε μια κατηγοριοποίηση των κυρίων τροπών έκφρασης του βάθους στην αρχιτεκτονική πρακτική, δημιουργώντας ένα σχήμα τεσσάρων μοντέλων βάθους. Πρόθεση μας ωστόσο δεν ήταν η αποκατάσταση της πρότερης ιεραρχικής τάξης του συγκεκριμένου δίπολου στη σημερινή αρχιτεκτονική σκέψη, αλλά η ανάδειξη του πολυσήμαντου χαρακτήρα της αρχιτεκτονικής, τον οποίο δεν πρέπει να της στερήσουμε εμμένοντας σε μια τεχνητή κατηγοριοποίηση. Ολοκληρώνοντας λοιπόν τη νοητική μας ανάλυση με τα τέσσερα μοντέλα βάθους, επιστρέφουμε σε μια περισσότερο ολιστική αντιμετώπιση της αρχιτεκτονικής, επιστρέφουμε και σε μια λογική που δεν πριμοδοτεί, δεν αλλάζει, και δεν απορρίπτει κάποιον από τους δύο αντιθετικούς όρους, αλλά τους θέλει να συνυπάρχουν με όλη τους την ένταση σε μια νέα κατάσταση.
