The progression of the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells is associated with the phase-specific expression of defined sets of genes, such as proto-oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes, while it is now widely accepted that transcription factors are also implicated. The family of E2F transcription factors and particularly E2F-1 participates to cell cycle progression. Numerous upstream stimulatory and inhibitory signals converge to the pRb/E2F pathway, which governs cellular future.
