The importance of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis is known and the involvement of vitamin D and estrogen, two regulatory factors which act through their corresponding intracellular receptors, in bone metabolism and maintenance of bone density is well established. The purpose of this thesis was the molecular analysis of the Bsm I, Apa I and Taq I polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and screening for point mutations of exon 1 and 2 of the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) gene, in order to determine if these factors are correlated with the pathogenesis of osteoporosis.
