Knowledge and lived experience of critical care nurses as far as it concerns patients' rights

Introduction: Patient’s rights are derived from the Human Rights. Aim: A) To explore the knowledge and experiences of ICU nurses with regard to the realization of patients’ rights in critical care. B) To develop a questionnaire/scale for the assessment of the knowledge and attitudes of ICU nurses. Method: A mixed method (focus group and survey) descriptive design, along with a methodological design for development of a questionnaire/scale were conducted. Results: The analysis resulted in a 36 item scale for the assessment of ICU nurses’ experiences and attitudes towards patient’s rights in ICU. The majority of ICU ignore the law on the patient’s rights. Coronary care nurses follow the law and participate in patient information giving process. The basic ethical principles are considered as significant from the majority of the ICU nurses.Εισαγωγή: Τα δικαιώματα των ασθενών είναι απόρροια των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων. Σκοπός: Α) Η διερεύνηση της γνώσης και της εμπειρίας των νοσηλευτών ΜΕΘ ως προς τα δικαιώματα των βαρέως πασχόντων και η τήρησή τους στη ΜΕΘ. Β) Η ανάπτυξη ερωτηματολογίου/κλίμακας για τη διερεύνηση των γνώσεων και στάσεων των νοσηλευτών ΜΕΘ. Μέθοδος: Συνδυασμός περιγραφικής μελέτης μεικτής μεθοδολογίας (ομάδες εστιασμένης συζήτησης και δημοσκόπηση) και μεθοδολογικού σχεδιασμού για την ανάπτυξη κλίμακας. Αποτελέσματα: Προέκυψε κλίμακα 36 ερωτήσεων αξιολόγησης εμπειρίας και στάσης των νοσηλευτών ΜΕΘ. Οι νοσηλευτές ΜΕΘ αγνοούν το νομικό πλαίσιο των δικαιωμάτων των ασθενών. Οι νοσηλευτές καρδιολογικών ΜΕΘ τηρούν τα δικαιώματα των ασθενών και συμμετέχουν στην ενημέρωση των ασθενών. Οι βασικές ηθικές αρχές θεωρούνται σημαντικές από υψηλό ποσοστό νοσηλευτών ΜΕΘ
