Following acute myocardial infarction (AMI), several neurohumoral disorders result in autonomic imbalance that reflects on the measures of heart rate variability (HRV). The excessive depression of HRV 2 to 3 weeks after AMI is considered an ominous sign for increased mortality in the long-term. Its prognostic value has been shown to be independent of other established risk factors such as the low ejection fraction of the left ventricle. The responsible mechanism is considered to be the prevailing influence of the sympathetic nervous system over the vagal tone that lowers the threshold for potentially lethal arrythmias.
