Immunohistochemical study of p53 protein and NM23 protein in hepatitis B related hepatocellular carcinoma

The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemichal expression of/?53and non-metastatic NM-23 gene in series of 122 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs)related to Hepatitis Β Virus (HBV). The adjacent hepatic tissue was also evaluated.Correlation with the survival was described.The total of 122 HCCs was classified into high grade (22.9%), middle (55.7%) andlow grade (21.3%). Adjacent non-neoplastic liver tissue was observed in 102 cases.The immunohistochemichal avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method wasperformed on formalin fixed paraffin sections for the detection of p53 and NM-23proteins using monoclonal antibodies.The x2 test was applied to identify the correlation between p5 3 and NM-23 with thegrade and the expression to the adjacent tissue. Survival estimates were calculated byusing the Kaplan-Meier method.The expression ofp53 was observed in 48/122 (39.3%) cases of HCCs. There wasno statistically significant correlation with the histological grade (p=0.7) and survival(p=0.46). A statistically significant correlation of the p53 protein expression wasdetected in the adjacent cirrhotic parenchyma (p0.2).
