Y. enterocolitica is widely distributed in nature in aquatic and animal reservoirs, with swine serving as a major reservoir for human pathogenic strains. Yersinia enterocolitica infections are a serious problem in countries around the Mediterranean sea, because of the high incidence of thalassemic syndromes. Iron overload and deferoxamine therapy in multitransfused children predisposes to systemic yersiniosis especially from strains O:3 and O:9 serotypes. Yersinia enterocolitica is responsible for 4% of human yersiniosis in general population in Greece. Not all Yersinia enterocolitica strains have the same pathogenicity.
