One of the most impressive early findings during the human genome mapping project was the discovery that 5-8% of the human genome was composed of human retroviruses (HERVs) and sequences derived from them. Frequently only partial sequences from HERVs (Long Terminal Repeats) have been identified that they could regulate the expression of adjacent genes. Two of these LTR5, LTR3 and LTR13 into consideration have been associated with immunological diseases. Taking the common origin of autoimmunity we tried to investigate the presence or absence of LTRs in patients with Graves’ disease.
