Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) has become a curative therapy for hematological malignancies and a variety of non malignant disorders for forty years. High doses of chemotherapy and radiation, combined with a new immune system generated by an allogeneic graft, have significant potential benefits for the treatment of multiple types of disease. Evidence for the importance of the new immune system in impoving outcome for patients undergoing HCT continues to grow. The aggressive induction regimens utilized in standard HCT may result in multiple organ toxicity; furthermore, prolonged time to engraftment and prolonged use of immunosuppression results in increased risk for bacterial, viral and fungal infections.
