BACKGROUND & AIMS Haematopoietic progenitors from PV patients are characterized by decreased apoptosis, increased kinase activity, hypersensitivity to haematopoietic cytokines and reduced responsiveness to negative signals from marrow microenviroment, while there are no analogous data for the ET progenitors. Endogenous erythroid colony formation (EEC) is a specific feature of myeloploliferative disorders (MPD) which is found in the vast majority of PV cases but only in 50-85% of patients suffering from ET.
