Abstract

Even though gonadotrophins play an important role on fullicogenesis, it seems that they do not suffice to initiate and complete the growing process. A number of factors may act synergically with gonadotrophins to trigger the initiation of follicular growth and to modulate early follicular development. Retinoblastoma protein modulates the primary stages of cell differentiation, and its concentration in human follicles peaks before antrum formation. C-kit, a tyrosine kinase receptor, is expressed in oocytes, and its ligand, stem cell factor, in the granulose cells both in the mouse and in the human.
