Introduction: A lot of factors seem to interfere to the healing process and anastomotic integrity, like O2 delivery to the tissues, tension to the anastomoses, surgical technique, improper large intestine mechanical preparation, patient’s general condition, inflammatory mediators, cytokines and growth factors. Nutrient solutions containing short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and hypertonic glucose have recently been associated with improved experimental anastomotic healing. SCFAs, the main fuel used by the colonocytes, are associated with an immediate trophic effect on the colonic mucosa.
