The Christology of Philoxenus of mabboug and the Synod of Chalcedon

After rummage and presentation of the christological teaching of Philoxenus Metropolitan of Mabboug, it is clear that, as a theologian, Philoxenos was very well aware of the patristic theology of the Eastern Fathers that preceded his era, especially that of Great Athanasius and Great Cyril, two of the most theologically influential patriarchs of Alexandria; he faithfully walked on their path using and transferring the distinction «Nature–Will», «Essence–Hypostasis» from Triadology to Christology. Moreover, Philoxenus had a thorough general knowledge of the Antiochian theological terminology, namely that of Theodore of Mopsoestia. Hence, Philoxenus studied the works of Theodore when he was a young student in the school of Edessa before he turned and adopted to the Cyrillian line of thought in Edessa. The Biblical concept of the becoming of Logos «into flesh or human», is the theological cornerstone upon which Philoxenus builds all his theological teaching and terminology. Furthermore, he bases the distinction «Nature–Will», and the distinction «Essence–Hypostasis» in the Christology on the concept of the becoming. In particular, the becoming of Logos «into flesh» and all Salvation brought by Christ, especially «His passions» is not connected to the divine nature, but only to the divine will, that is to the divine Economy. Thus, this becoming preserves the immutability of the Logos and the divine nature from any alteration, vitiation, and Theopaschitism, as long as the Logos, by His will, became human, and voluntarily He suffered and died in flesh. Also, the becoming of Logos «into flesh or human» is indissolubly connected to the distinction «Essence–Hypostasis» in the Christology so long as it includes the assuming of a whole and common human nature, and not of human person. In other words, the becoming includes – from the first moment of conception (εξ’ άκρας συλλήψεως) – assuming of flesh with rational soul, which in turn became enhypostasiazed in the hypostase of the Logos, thus – regardless whether – the assumed human element considered and designated as human nature, it cannot be counted, exactly as long as it became enhypostasiazed in the hypostase of the God Logos. Thereupon, the emphasis on «assuming of whole and common human nature» is witness of the soteriological dimensions of the divine incarnation, as well as the necessity of the whole creation for Salvation, rennovation, and recapitulation, the realization of which cannot be without the existence of the whole and real human nature in Christ so as to attain the Salvation of the world and the human race through the unity «created–uncreated». Therefore, according to Philoxenus, the hypostatic and natural union of the two natures of Christ indicate not only the real character of this union, but also they point out that the Christ after union is «one hypostasis, and one incarnate nature of God the Word»; thus, the assuming of the common human nature by the Logos cannot introduce in Christ neither another nature, nor another hypostasis, as long as, the enumeration, according to Philoxenus, introduces and means the division. Precisely, according to Philoxenus, since the consideration (= the distinction) and the enumeration of each nature separately declares also the existence of nature on the ontological level, therefore the nature, according to Philoxenus, cannot but be real and self-existent. Based on the above, this confirmation of Philoxenus is the reason of the difference between his dogmatic teaching and that found in the term of the Chalcedonian Council. Moreover, by refusing the cyrilian distinction of the two natures «only by the theory», Philoxenus rejected the formula «one Christ known (γνωριζόμενον) in two natures» which almost corresponds to the formula «two natures after the union» «only in theory». In fact, contemporary theological scientific research concludes that the dogmatic Term formulated by the Chalcedonian Council is not based on the Tome of Pope Leo, but mainly and particularly on the Cyrillian Christological thought. In our opinion, this conclusion is a crucial point for the promotion of the Theological Dialogue toward the breakthrough of all the impediments between the Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Churches, and represents a throwback to the Union and full sacramental Communion, which existed before the Council of Chalcedon.Μετά από τη διερεύνηση και παρουσίαση της χριστολογικής διδασκαλίας του Φιλόξενου μητροπολίτου Ιεραπόλεως, έγινε σαφές ότι ο Φιλόξενος ως καλός γνώστης της προγενέστερης πατερικής θεολογίας, ακολούθησε πιστά τα αχνάρια των ανατολικών πατέρων, ιδιαίτερα μάλιστα εκείνα των αγίων Αθανασίου και Κυρίλλου πατριαρχών Αλεξανδρείας, στη χρήση και στην μεταφορά της διάκρισης «φύσης-βούλησης», και της διάκρισης «φύσης-υπόστασης», από το χώρο της Τριαδολογίας σ’ εκείνο της Χριστολογίας. Πέραν τούτου όμως, ο ίδιος είχε επίσης και μια επαρκή γνώση της αντιοχειανής θεολογικής ορολογίας γενικότερα, και εκείνης του Θεοδώρου Μοψουεστίας ειδικότερα, καθώς ως φοιτητής της σχολής της Εδέσσης διδάχτηκε ασφαλώς τα έργα του Θεοδώρου, πριν στραφεί ως νεαρός τότε προς την κυρίλλεια παράταξη της Εδέσσης, στην οποία και εντάχτηκε. Η βιβλική έννοια της γένεσης «του Λόγου σε σάρκα ή σε άνθρωπο» αποτελεί τον ακρογωνιαίο θεολογικό ‘λίθο’, πάνω στον οποίο οικοδομεί ο Φιλόξενος όλη τη χριστολογική του διδασκαλία και ορολογία. Άλλωστε, πάνω στην έννοια της γένεσης οικοδομείται τόσο η διάκριση «φύσης-βούλησης», όσο και η διάκριση «φύσης-υπόστασης» στη Χριστολογία. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η γένεση του Λόγου σε σάρκα και όλο το σωτηριώδες έργο του Χριστού «ιδιαίτερα το πάθος Του» δεν συνδέονται με τη θεία φύση αλλά με τη θεία βούληση δηλαδή με την θεία Οικονομία. Γι’ αυτό και η γένεση αυτή διαφυλλάτει το άτρεπτο και το αμετάβλητο του Λόγου και της θείας φύσης Του από κάθε μεταβολή, αλλοίωση και θεοπασχητισμό, εφόσον ο Λόγος με τη δική Του θέληση και βούληση έγινε άνθρωπος, καθώς και εκούσια υπέμεινε τα πάθη και γεύτηκε το θάνατο εν σαρκί. Επίσης, η γένεση «του Λόγου σε σάρκα ή σε άνθρωπο» συνδέεται άρρηκτα με τη διάκριση «φύσης-υπόστασης» στη Χριστολογία, καθώς η γένεση περιλαμβάνει την πρόσληψη ακέραιας κοινής και όχι υποστατικής ή προσωπικής ανθρώπινης φύσης. Με άλλα λόγια, η γένεση περιλαμβάνει την – εξ’ άκρας συλλήψεως – πρόσληψη της εμψυχωμένης με λογική ψυχή σάρκας, η οποία με τον τρόπο αυτό ενυποστασιάζεται στην υπόσταση του Λόγου, και γι’ αυτό παρά το γεγονός ότι το προσληφθέν ανθρώπινο στοιχείο αναγνωρίζεται και ονομάζεται ως ανθρώπινη φύση, ωστόσο δεν υπόκειται σε απαρίθμηση, ακριβώς διότι είναι ενυπόστατο στην υπόσταση του Θεού Λόγου. Συνεπώς, ο τονισμός της πρόσληψης ακέραιας κοινής ανθρώπινης φύσης αποδεικνύει ακριβώς τις σωτηριολογικές διαστάσεις της θείας ενανθρώπησης, καθώς επίσης και την ανάγκη όλης της δημιουργίας για σωτηρία, ανακαίνιση και ανακεφαλαίωση, των οποίων δεν θα ήταν εφικτή η πραγματοποίηση χωρίς την ύπαρξη της τέλειας και πραγματικής ανθρώπινης φύσης στον Χριστό, προκειμένου να επιτευχθεί η σωτηρία του κόσμου και του ανθρώπου μέσα από την ένωση «κτιστού- άκτιστου». Επομένως, σύμφωνα με τον Φιλόξενο, η υποστατική και η φυσική ένωση των δύο φύσεων στον Χριστό, δείχνουν όχι μόνο το πραγματικό χαρακτήρα αυτής της ένωσης, αλλά ταυτόχρονα υπογραμμίζουν και το γεγονός ότι ο Χριστός μετά από την ένωση είναι «μία φύσις και υπόστασις του Θεού Λόγου σεσαρκωμένη», και γι’ αυτό η πρόσληψη της κοινής ανθρώπινης φύσης εκ μέρους του Λόγου δεν μπορεί να εισαγάγει σ’ Αυτόν ούτε μια δεύτερη φύση αλλά ούτε μια δεύτερη υπόσταση, καθώς η απαρίθμηση, για τον Φιλόξενο, εισαγάγει και εκφράζει την διαίρεση. Ακριβώς επειδή, κατά τον Φιλόξενο, η γνώση και απαρίθμηση της κάθε φύσης ξεχωριστά δεν μπορούν παρά να εκφράζουν ταυτόχρονα και την ύπαρξή της φύσης επί οντολογικού επιπέδου, η φύση δεν μπορεί κατ’ αυτόν παρά να υπάρχει ως πραγματική και αυθύπαρκτη. Επομένως, αυτή ακριβώς η προβληματική και διαπίστωση του Φιλόξενου αποτελεί και την αιτία της απόκλισης της δογματικής του διδασκαλίας από τον δογματικό Όρο της Χαλκηδόνας. Εξάλλου, ο Φιλόξενος μη δεχόμενος τη διδασκαλία του Αγ. Κυρίλλου για την «κατά τη θεωρία μόνη» διάκριση των φύσεων, απέρριψε μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο τη φόρμουλα «εν δύο φύσεσιν γνωριζόμενον» που ουσιαστικά αντιστοιχεί με τη φόρμουλα «δύο φύσεις μετά την ένωση κατά τη θεωρία μόνη». Το γεγονός ότι η σύγχρονη επιστημονική θεολογική έρευνα, κατέληξε στο συμπέρασμα ότι ο δογματικός Όρος της Χαλκηδόνιας, δεν βασίστηκε από άποψη θεολογική στον Τόμο του Λέοντος αλλά κυρίως και κατ’ εξοχήν στη κυρίλλεια Χριστολογία, αποτελεί κατά τη γνώμη μας πολύ σημαντικό στοιχείο για την προώθηση του Θεολογικού Διαλόγου με στόχο την υπέρβαση όλων των μέχρι σήμερα υφισταμένων εμποδίων μεταξύ των Χαλκηδονίων και των Μη Χαλκηδονίων Εκκλησιών, προκειμένου να αποκατασταθεί η μεταξύ τους διασαλευθείσα ενότητα και μυστηριακή κοινωνία που ήταν αρραγής μέχρι τη σύνοδο της Χαλκηδόνας
