Sorbus domestica (Rosaceae) fruits are empirically used in many regions of Europe as antioxidants in drinks and beverages and in traditional medicine as hypoglycaemic agents and as remedy against the long term diabetic complications. However, there were not any scientific references concerning these activities. In the present research work fruit extracts were tested about their phenolic content, the antioxidant potential (DPPH· and luminol chemiluminescence tests) and their ability to inhibit the aldose reductase enzyme (ALR2). This enzyme is postulated to be associated with the development of the long term diabetic complications, where also cellular oxidative stress is implied.
