As it was shown previously, histone proteins play a critical role in metal induced toxicity and carcinogenesis. Numerous studies with peptides, modelling the binding sites in histones, have shown that metal binding can affect the histones tertiary structure and thus interfere with histone modifications, leading to chromatin remodelling and alterations in gene expression. In some cases, the complexes formed may facilitate the hydrolysis of the peptides and/or catalyze the formation of reactive oxygen species that could act directly on the DNA molecules.
