In Greece, as in many other countries, methicillin-resistant staphylococcal strains (S. aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci) are the major cause of nosocomial infections. The treatment of these infections is difficult, as many of the methicillin-resistant staphylococci exhibit cross-resistance to a broad spectrum of antimicrobial agents. Clones of these multiresistant staphylococcal strains can easily predominate in the nosocomial environment and spread in different hospital care units. Macrolides (such as erythromycine) and lincosamides (such as clindamycine), which are chemically distinct antimicrobial agents but share a similar mode of action, are widely used in the treatment of staphylococcal infections.
