THE GROWTH RESPONSE TO DIFFERENT CLIPPING FREQUENCIES OF 5 GRASSES SUITABLE FORTURFGRASS OR FOR REHABILITATION OF DISTURBED SOILS WAS STUDIED. THE FOLLOWING MAIN RESULTS WERE FOUND. 1. FREQUENT CLIPPING SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE TOTAL ABOVEGROUND AND SHOOT BIOMASS BUT NOT THE LEAF AND ROOT BIOMASS. 2. THE LEAF/SHOOT RATIO (LSR=VISUAL QUALITY INDEX) WAS INCREASED BY CLIPPING BECAUSE IF FAVOURED THE LEAVES IN THE ABOVEGROUND BIOMASS. 3. THE SHOOT/ROOT RATIO (SRR) WASDECREASED WITH CLIPPING INDICATING AN ADAPTATION ABILITY TO DROUGHT OF THE SPECIES STUDIED. 4. THE CALORIFIC VALUES (CAL/G DB) WERE INCREASED WITH CLIPPING FREQUENCY. ALSO THE DISTRIBUTION OF ENERGY TO ROOTS (VIGOR INDEX) WAS FAVOURED. 5. CLIPPING FAVOURED THE GROWTH OF LEAF...
