We performed genotypic analysis of 26 cases diagnosed mainly as lymphoid reactive processes – 22 cases – and 4 borderline cases, for the purpose of investigating the possible existence of clonal gene rearrangements. Such rearrangements have been detected in a number of clinically benign entities but so far they have not been reported in clear reactive processes. We report here that 5/22 reactive processes analysed with IG and TCR gene probes contain clonal gene rearrangements and do so 2/4 borderline cases. These findings bear implications concerning the mechanism of lymphomatogenesis as well as the diagnosis of disease.
