Scholars of the New Testament have noted the ways in which first century CE writers utilize and transform themes related to Israel’s divine conflict traditions, most notably in the Johannine Apocalypse, Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, and the letter to the Ephesians. Yet in spite of the interest in the apocalyptic tenor of Paul’s letter to the Romans, along with inquiries into his understanding of the “principalities and powers” (1 Cor 15:24; Rom 8:35–39; cf.
