The estimated burden of HuNoV on public health is 685 million and 20 million illnesses each year in the world and the US, respectively. This results in approximately $4.3 billion and $60.3 billion in direct and indirect annual costs worldwide. In the USA, the annual economic burden of foodborne gastroenteritis illness has been estimated to be $77 billion.
