The Center for Electromechanics at The University of Texas at Austin (CEM-UT) has designed and built high-energy pulsed homopolar generators (HPG's) since 1972. A 5-megajoule (MJ) disc-type HPG was built and tested in 1974 as a high current source for pulsing toroidal and poloidal fields in tokamak devices. The sucess of this prototype generator led to the design of a system of four 50-MJ, disc-type HPG's to power the Texas Experimental tokamak (TEXT). Although never built, the 50-MJ module for this system became the baseline for the design of the 60-MJ system described here.
