This thesis researches the ecosystem of what is now modern-day Minneapolis, Minnesota before its settlement in the 19th century. An understanding of the area?s natural state is applied to the redevelopment of Boom Island, creating a wildlife refuge that prioritizes flora and fauna that once used to reside in the Great Lakes Region. This naturalistic environment prioritizes the animal; providing homes that are unintrusive, accommodating, minimize contact with people, and provide patrons with understanding of different native species and their habitats.
