The mechanical friction losses of engine has a great effect on fuel economy. To improve the vehicle fuel economy, various technologies such as improvement of powertrain efficiency, use of light weight material, improvement of aerodynamic design, have been studied. One of the possible way to improve the vehicle fuel economy is to reduce the engine friction loss by the engine oil characteristics. In this study, the friction characteristics of engine components according to the engine oil temperature was investigated by using strip-down method. From the result, we obtained the optimum temperature of engine oil for reducing mechanical friction loss and provided experimental data about the effect of engine components on friction loss
