The increasing importance of poly(ethylene terephthalate) terylene has made it necessary to have a fuller understanding of the manner in which this polyester undergoes thermal breakdown. Several investigations into this have already been reported, but in no case has it been possible to produce sufficient evidence from which the actual mechanism of breakdown might be deduced. Furthermore, there is even lacking a proper understanding of the manner of breakdown of simpler esters, particularly those that might be postulated as holding an Intermediate position in the general plan of polyester decomposition.
