The control of compensatory growth in liver and kidney has been studied with particular reference to the early events in the process. It has been shown that immediately after unilateral nephrectorhy there is no significant change in the glomerular filtration rate of the surviving kidney, though its blood supply increases by about 25%. As might be anticipated, an animal which has thus suffered a loss of half its renal function shows accumulation of urea and creatinine in its plasma. Perhaps surprisingly, on the other hand, the operation appears to cause no serious metabolic upset since plasma amino acid levels where remarkably unaffected.
