Gravitational waves were predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity which described gravity as arising from the curvature of space-time due to the presence of mass. Gravitational waves are caused by the acceleration of an asymmetrical mass distribution which perturbs space-time causing a ripple-like effect that travels at the speed of light. These ripples are known as gravitational waves. The first directly detected gravitational waves were observed on the 14th of September 2015.
