Advances in neonatal care during the past 15 years have resulted in an increased survival rate for preterm newborn infants with birth weight of less than 1500 grams. Despite therapeutic improvements, infection remains a major problem in this group of babies due to their increased susceptibility to infection. In a double blind, placebo controlled trial, we investigated the effect of intravenous immunoglobulin (IgG) in the prevention of nosocomial infection in very low birth weight infants (with birth weight ≤ 1500 grams and gestational age ≤ 32 weeks).
