Competing risks analysis is more appropriate than standard survival analysis when there are two or more mutually exclusive possible events, and investigates which one of the events occurs first. Competing risks analysis constitutes the simplest form of multi-state modelling. Multi-state modelling more generally extends the competing risks approach to consider events of interest that can occur after the first event. However, competing risks and multi-state modelling have not been used to their full potential in health research.
