Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide and remains a largely unmet clinical need. Despite decades of pre-clinical stroke research there are only two licensed interventions: intravenous delivery of thrombolytic recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) within 4.5 hours of stroke or mechanical thrombectomy. However, the number of patients eligible to receive either treatment is limited. An alternative intervention is needed, one which directly address specific aspects of stroke pathophysiology.
