Abstract

International audienceEdouard Glissant’s Ormerod can be read as a response to Derek Walcott’s Omeros: I examine this relationship through the motif of the voyage to the underworld, which presents itself as central to both texts. The analysis of these two authors’ rewriting and reinvention of this motif opens up an exploration of how the two texts construct themselves in relation with the European canon, and more specifically in relation with the epic tradition. The voyages or descents to the underworld in Omeros and Ormerod appear not only as initiatory journeys, but also as privileged spaces through which to investigate the link between writing and historical narrative, as well as the connection between literature and the world.
