Il vulcano meraviglioso. Antropologia del racconto fantastico vesuviano

International audienceLiving halfway between the real and the imaginary, the legendary is the natural habitat for the metaphor. In the case of wild nature, like volcanoes,one of the oldest metaphors of these places is that of giants. This figure is also present for Vesuvius, which rises near Naples, in southern Italy, where would live trapped Alcyonaeus, the leader of the rebels who fought the gods of Greek Olympus in the mythological Gigantomachy. The mount Vesuvius, being more than an expression of nature, because it is a real cultural object “good to think”, over the last two millennia, but especially in the last four centuries, has become a symbol, whose meaning changes depending on the context and according to what we want to be said. Through dynamic and elastic narratives and images that have passed from one generation to the next over the centuries, Vesuvius and its eruptions have marked the life of the territory and the community that lives there. Folk tales often give shape to anguish, but other times to passion and romance, certainly not only to destruction, but also to fertility. Vesuvius threatens, but at the same time announces and warns people not to betray the link and the pact with the land in which they live, a hard territory in which however everything is created, destroyed and recreated, in a circularity that reunites the original compositional elements: the earth with the air, the fire with the water.Vivendo a metà strada tra il reale e l’immaginario, il leggendario è l’habitat naturale della metafora. Nel caso della natura selvaggia, come i vulcani, una delle più antiche metafore di tali luoghi è quella dei giganti. Questa figura è presente anche per il Vesuvio, che sorge nei pressi di Napoli, nell’Italia meridionale, dove vivrebbe intrappolato Alcioneo, il capo dei ribelli che combatterono gli dei dell’Olimpo greco nella mitologica Gigantomachia. Il monte Vesuvio, in quanto più di un’espressione della natura, perché è un vero oggetto culturale “buono da pensare”, negli ultimidue millenni, ma soprattutto negli ultimi quattro secoli, è diventato un simbolo, il cui significato cambia a seconda del contesto e in base a ciò chevogliamo dire. Attraverso narrazioni e immagini dinamiche ed elastiche, passate da una generazione all’altra nel corso dei secoli, il Vesuvio e le sueeruzioni hanno segnato la vita del territorio e della comunità che vive in quei luoghi. I racconti popolari spesso danno forma all’angoscia, ma altrevolte alla passione e al romanticismo, certamente non solo alla distruzione, ma anche alla fertilità. Il Vesuvio minaccia, ma allo stesso tempo annuncia e ammonisce la popolazione a non tradire il legame e il patto con la loro terra, un territorio duro in cui però tutto è creato, distrutto e ricreato, in una circolarità che ricongiunge gli elementi compositivi originari: la terra con l’aria, il fuoco con l’acqua
