Proust à travers les photographies

International audienceThis paper wonders about the precise technical nature of photography which is at stake in the famous Proustian metaphor of Literature as the “development” of pictures by the intelligence. Drawing on several allusions in La Recherche to the photographic development process, as well as to the narrated experiences of handling pictures, we come up with the idea that Proust uses as a photographic structuring model in his writing the photographic glass plate – very common at his time – rather than the picture on paper. This allows to emphasize the Proustian distinctive operation of metaphorical superposition, which stems from the filtering potential offered by the glass plates.L'article s'interroge sur la nature technique exacte de la photographie en jeu dans la célèbre métaphore proustienne de la littérature comme « développement » de clichés par l'intelligence. En reprenant les différentes références dans La Recherche au processus du tirage et aux manipulations d'images, on émet l'hypothèse selon laquelle Proust a pour modèle photographique structurant son écriture la photographie sur plaque de verre - très courante à son époque - plutôt que sur papier. Cela éclaire l'opération de superposition métaphorique caractéristique de l'écriture proustienne, rendue possible par le filtrage et par la semi-transparence propre à ce support
