International audienceBetween the 8th and the 11th century, there were a growing number of conflicts in Europe involving Scandinavians as part of the Viking invasions. Yet these events should not be reduced to a simple succession of conflicts on the continent: when the situation required it, Nordic warriors also knew how to open negotiations and conclude agreements with local elites. This article examines diplomatic practices used by each side during the process of establishing the peace. Thus, I highlight the important similarities in these uses, which facilitated discussions among the protagonists.
