Connection Between Psycho - Emotional Factors and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

SUMMARY Revalence of the problem and the aim of the work. Psycho-emotional factors: long – term stress, depression, anxiety negatively affect not only the quality of life, but also various systems of organs, including the temporomandibular joint. In today’s society more and more individuals, many of whom are young people, often experience stress. There is too little focus on the influence of psycho-emotional factors on appearance of temporomandibular joint disorder. The purpose of this study was to do a systemic analysis of the reviewed articles, evaluating the relationship between psycho-emotional factors and temporomandibular joint disorder Material and methods. PubMed/Medline, Willey Online Library data bases were used for the search of articles. Selected articles were published between the year of 2014 – 2019. The search for scientific articles was carried out using the following keywords: temporomandibular disorder, psychoemotional stress, anxiety, depression, according to the PRISMA Statement. Results. The study included 6 research articles, describing the relationship between psychoemotional factors and temporomandibular dysfunction. 3952 students participated in the research. The prevalence of temporomandibular joint dysfunction among the participants ranged from 27.7% to 52.1%, with anxiety and/or depression symptoms ranging from 30.5% to 70.1%. 1666 students in the 6 systematically analyzed articles had temporomandibular joint dysfunction, of whom 975 were also diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression. Five studies found a statistically significant relationship between temporomandibular joint dysfunction and anxiety and/or depression. All of the studies included an analysis of the relationship between temporomandibular joint dysfunction and anxiety and/or depression. The odds ratio for developing temporomandibular joint dysfunction with anxiety and/or depression ranged from 1.093 to 3.655. Overall odds ratio 2.21 (p = 0.0024). Conclusion. A systematic analysis of the literature revealed a statistically significant relationship between the temporomandibular joint dysfunction and psycho-emotional factors. A meta-analysis of literature has shown that there is a direct (positive) correlation between temporomandibular joint dysfunction and anxiety and depression
