Supernumerary teeth in Department of Orthodontics at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

Relevance of the problem: knowledge about the morphology and localization of supernumerary teeth is important for diagnosis of supernumerary teeth. Not rarely supernumerary teeth can cause some complications which affects the esthetics and function of the teeth. Early and accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment of supernumerary teeth can help to prevent future complications. Aim of the work: to investigate the supernumerary teeth of the patients in Department of Orthodontics at Lithuanian University Of Health Sciences in five years. Material and the methods: after the selection criteria 19 patients and their 24 supernumerary teeth were analyzed in this retrospective study. Patients were grouped by gender, age, number of supernumerary teeth. Supernumerary teeth were grouped by localization, eruption status, complications and treatment This study was approved by the Bioethics Center of the LUHS and all the necessary data was collected from the patients‘ medical records at the LUHS Clinic of Orthodontics ensuring the confidentiality of the subjects. Results: male to female ration of the supernumerary teeth was 3,75:1. The average age of the patient was 9,63 years. One patient had approximately 1,26 supernumerary teeth. More than 90% of all supernumerary teeth were localized in the anterior maxilla. There were found 41,67% supernumerary teeth which were erupted in the oral cavity. 16 supernumerary teeth caused at least 1 complication, 64,71% of them – the retention of the adjacent teeth. From 24 supernumerary teeth 22 were surgically removed. Conclusion: supernumerary teeth are more common in males. supernumerary teeth are often unerupted and found in the anterior region of maxilla. One supernumerary teeth often cause one complication which is the retention of adjacent tooth. The most common management of supernumerary teeth is the surgical removal of them. The localization of supernumerary teeth does not affect the eruption status and the presence of complications. The eruption status of supernumerary teeth does not affect the presence of complications
