Pesticides in groundwater at market gardens and forest tree nurseries in Finland

This thesis examines whether traces of pesticides can be found in the groundwater at market gardens and forest tree nurseries in Tavastia Region in Finland. The study began with the mapping of market gardens and forest tree nurseries in the region. Secondly, it was determined which of these target sites are located in groundwater areas. Groundwater samples were collected from wells on the sites and analysed for traces of pesticides. 16 of these samples were taken from market gardens and 5 samples from forest tree nurseries. The data of market gardens and forest tree nurseries was collected in 2003 and 2004. The groundwater samples were collected and analysed in 2004. The study indicates that there are plenty of market gardens and forest tree nurseries in Tavastia Region. The total number of these units is 394. From these 369 are market gardens and 16 forest tree nurseries. In addition there are 9 schools or research institutes of gardening or agriculture in this region. Most of the market gardens and forest tree nurseries are non-active, i.e. not operating anymore. Of the market gardens that were active in 2003, about 30 per cent were located in groundwater areas. Of the non-active market gardens, the location of which could be established, about 10 per cent were on groundwater areas. Of the forest tree nurseries, both active and non-active, over 60 per cent are located in groundwater areas. The groundwater samples were analysed by Lahden tutkimuslaboratorio, a research laboratory in Lahti, and 102 pesticides or their metabolites were found. In the laboratory 78 pesticides and metabolites were analysed by gas chromatography (GC/MS) and 24 by liquid chromatography (LC/MS). The pesticides and their metabolites that occurred in the groundwater samples were atrazine, simazine, terbuthylazine, DEA, DEDIA, DIA, hexazinone, ethofumesate and BAM. Pesticides or their metabolites were found in 40 per cent of the samples. The degree (461/2000) of Ministry of Social Affairs and Health sets a threshold value of 0,1 µg/l for pesticides in drinking water. The amount of pesticides or their metabolites exceeded this limit in three samples. The results of this study suggest that the most serious pesticide contamination risk for groundwater is caused by the extensive use of herbicides in forest tree nurseries. As to market gardens, the ones that grow or have grown flowers and decorative plants (trees and bushes) on groundwater areas for many decades are the ones that pose a more serious pesticide contamination risks for groundwater.Tämän työn tavoitteena oli tutkia torjunta-aineiden esiintymistä pohjavedessä kauppapuutarhoilla ja metsätaimitarhoilla Hämeen ympäristökeskuksen alueella. Työssä kartoitettiin alueella olevat kauppapuutarha- ja metsätaimitarhakohteet sekä selvitettiin sijaitsevatko nämä kartoituskohteet pohjavesialueilla. Lisäksi työssä analysoitiin torjunta-ainepitoisuuksia pohjavesinäytteistä, joista 16 oli otettu kauppapuutarhojen kaivoista ja 5 metsätaimitarhoilta. Työn kartoitusosuus on tehty vuosina 2003 ja 2004. Pohjavesinäytteet on analysoitu vuonna 2004. Kartoituksessa kauppapuutarhoja ja metsätaimitarhoja Hämeen alueelta löydettiin runsaasti, kaikkiaan 394 kappaletta. Kauppapuutarhakohteita näistä oli 369 ja metsätaimitarhakohteita 16. Lisäksi kartoituskohteissa on mukana 9 puutarha- tai maatalousalan oppilaitosta tai tutkimuslaitosta. Suurin osa kartoituskohteista oli toimintansa jo lopettaneita. Kauppapuutarhoista, jotka olivat toiminnassa vuonna 2003, pohjavesialueilla sijaitsi noin 30 prosenttia. Aiemmin toimineista kauppapuutarhoista, joiden sijainti tiedetään, pohjavesialueella on sijainnut noin 10 prosenttia. Metsätaimitarhakohteista pohjavesialueilla sijaitsee yli 60 prosenttia. Kaivovesinäytteistä havaittiin laboratorioanalyyseissä torjunta-aineita ja torjunta-aineiden hajoamistuotteita. Lahden tutkimuslaboratorio analysoi vesinäytteistä monijäämämenetelmällä 102 torjunta-ainetta tai niiden hajoamistuotetta. Torjunta-aineista ja hajoamistuotteista 78 analysoitiin laboratoriossa kaasukromatografisella menetelmällä (GC/MS) ja 24 nestekromatografisella menetelmällä (LC/MS). Näytteistä todettiin atratsiinia, simatsiinia ja terbutylatsiinia sekä niiden hajoamistuotteita desetyyli-atratsiinia DEA:a, desetyyli-deisopropyyliatratsiinia DEDIA:a ja desisopropyyliatratsiini DIA:a. Lisäksi kaivovesinäytteistä todettiin heksatsinonia, etofumesaattia sekä diklobeniilin hajoamistuotetta 2,6-diklooribentsoamidia BAM:a. Tutkituista näytteistä 40 prosentissa oli havaittavissa pieniä pitoisuuksia torjunta-aineita tai niiden hajoamistuotteita. Kolmesta kohteesta löytyi talousveden raja-arvon 0,1 µg/l ylittävä torjunta-aineen tai torjunta-aineen hajoamistuotteen pitoisuus. Tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan olettaa, että pohjavesien kannalta suurimman riskin muodostavat runsaasti herbisidejä käyttävät metsäpuiden taimitarhat. Kauppapuutarhoista pohjavesille eniten riskejä aiheutuu pohjavesialueilla sijaitsevista koristepuita ja -pensaita tai kukkia kasvattavista kauan toimineista kauppapuutarhoista. /Kir1
