Developing Sappee ski resort into an all year round tourist resort

The traditional ski resort business has come to a turning point. The climate change, changes in consumer habits, the common growth of environmental awareness, as well as the tough competition, are at the moment the biggest challenges on the branch. Under the initiative of Pälkäne municipality I have researched as a Master of Science thesis the possibilities of developing the Sappee Ski Resort into an all year round tourist resort. Sappee is located in Pälkäne about 50 km from the City of Tampere. It was founded in 1989 and is today the 10th biggest ski resort in Finland. Its goal is to be the biggest in Southern Finland until the year 2015-20. In order to get there, the resort has to find new crowd pullers to attract the customers and especially it has to try to find attractions that would make the resort vital in all seasons. In cooperation with the management of the Sappee Ski Resort, I have in my research come to a conclusion to propose the building of a Spa, Golf fields and a Congress Center to attract more conference visitors, as a solution to the challenge. Water element will be in a bigger role on the Hill of Sappeenvuori by bringing more housing and functions close to the Lake Iso-Arajärvi. To improve the general appearance of the Sappee Resort, there are following measures to be done: an extension to the Huippu Event Centre and a new Info Building for exhibitions and information on the main parking field of Sappee. Also the crossing path of the resort village will be developed into a real Main Street of Sappee. As such it will be used as a common living room for the resort customers. In addition to these measures all the roads will be paved and fixed and the existing blocks of housing shall be unified by using similar site structures such as fences, lampposts and street furniture.Perinteinen hiihtokeskustoiminta on tullut murrosvaiheeseen. Ilmastonmuutos, kulutustottumusten muutokset, ympäristötietoisuuden kasvu ja kova kilpailu ovat alan suurimmat haasteet tällä hetkellä. Pälkäneen kunnan aloitteesta olen diplomityössäni pyrkinyt tutkimaan Sappeen hiihtokeskuksen mahdollisuuksia kehittyä perinteisestä hiihtokeskuksesta ympärivuotiseksi matkailualueeksi. Sappeen matkailualue sijaitsee Pälkäneen kunnassa 50 km päässä Tampereelta. Se on toiminut vuodesta 1989 lähtien ja on nykyisin Suomen 10. suurin hiihtokeskus. Tavoite on olla Etelä-Suomen suurin vuoteen 2015-20 mennessä. Siihen pääsemiseksi alueelle on löydettävä uusia vetonauloja yleisön houkuttelemiseksi ja ennen kaikkea pyrittävä löytämään toimintoja, jotka tekisivät keskuksesta elinvoimaisen kaikkina vuodenaikoina. Työssäni olen yhteistyössä Sappeen hiihtokeskuksen johdon kanssa päätynyt esittämään ratkaisuiksi ensisijaisesti kylpylähotellin ja golfkenttien rakentamista alueelle sekä kokousmatkailun kasvattamista uuden kokous- ja kongressikeskuksen rakentamisen kautta. Vesielementti tulee voimakkaammin mukaan myös Iso-Arajärven rantojen tehokkaammalla hyödyntämisellä. Alueen yleisilmeen ja viihtyvyyden parantamiseksi esitän Tapahtumakeskus Huipun yhteyteen rakennettavaksi laajennusta ja kokonaisuuden edustalle uutta informaatiorakennusta näyttelyitä ja opastusta varten. Alueen halkaiseva väylä muutetaan oikeaksi kyläraitiksi, josta tulee keskuksen yhteinen olohuone. Näiden toimien lisäksi alueen liikenneväylät kunnostetaan ja olemassa olevat rakennuskorttelit siistitään yhtenäistämällä niitä erilaisin rakentein ja kadunkalusteilla. /Kir0
