De la draperie à la bonneterie de laine: Histoire d’une substitution (Pyrénées, fin XVIIIe-XIXe siècle)

International audienceAbstract“The passage of drapery to wool hosiery (Pyrenees, XIXth century)”.Between the end of the Ancien Regime and the Bourbon Restoration, the Pyrenean weaving factories largely disappeared. They were replaced with the production of wool hosiery. The fabrics, out-dated and not economically viable, gave way to the manufacturing of traditional or original woollen fabrics. This transformation was due to the emergence of the spinning mill, the valuation of local resources – especially wool –, and the utilisation of women hand-knitting at home. The socio-economic balance, based on a system built on wool worsted, is the origin of diverse forms of regional textile industry, and explains the late mechanization of the hosiery industry.Résumé« De la draperie à la bonneterie de laine. Histoire d’une substitution (Pyrénées, XIXe siècle). »Entre la fin de l’Ancien Régime et la Restauration, les tissages des Pyrénées disparaissent en grande partie ; ils sont partiellement remplacés par la fabrication de bonneterie de laine. Les tissus, démodés et économiquement non viables, laissent la place à des lainages de confection traditionnelle ou de fantaisie. La mutation repose sur l’existence de filatures, sur un système de valorisation des ressources de proximité – en particulier de la laine –, sur la mobilisation de femmes au sein du travail de tricotage à domicile. L’équilibre socio-économique fondé sur un système bâti autour de la laine peignée, à l’origine des diverses formes de l’industrie textile régionale, explique la mécanisation tardive de la bonneterie
