Intelligent tutoring systems are specialized computer programs utilizing artificial intelligence in order to provide students with interactive tutoring. Many tutoring systems construct a model of the student s current knowledge and understanding of the subject matter in order to personalize the tutoring for a student. Plan recognition is one of the diagnostic methods available for student modeling. This thesis explores plan recognition and intelligent tutoring systems, and how plan recognition can be incorporated by intelligent tutoring systems. We examine the strength and weaknesses of plan recognition, and how intelligent tutoring systems can benefit from having knowledge of a student's plan
