Background and Aims: Immune-mediated diseases such as allergies and autoimmune diseases have increased during the past decades in developed countries. The incidence of type 1 diabetes is very high in Finland and both genetic and environmental factors, such as HLA genes and enteroviruses, are probably contributing to this phenomenon. Immunopathology of immune-mediated diseases is mediated by proinflammatory T cells, which can secrete several cytokines to contribute the tissue damage. Accordingly, imbalances in differentiation and function of the T cells are commonly observed in patients.
