International audienceThe study carried out on the timber of the barge Arles-Rhone 3 is part of the research about the technical history of Gallo-Roman inland water transport and particularly to the flatbottom barges of Rhône-Saône group. Thanks to the quality and quantity of the structures, the results are representative of the great majority of remains preserved and analyzed by means of four disciplines: xylology, dendromorphology, traceology and dendrochronology. They concern both the geographical and chronological origin of the trees as well as the woodcraft within the boat. Thus, wooden pieces are mainly made of old deciduous oaks, which come probably from Val de Saône, and old firs felled down after 50 AD. Carpentry characteristics ap...
